Since this is a monthly publication, significant results are published rapidly, generally two to three months after being accepted. The goal of Computational Materials Science is to report on results that provide new or unique insights into, or significantly expand our understanding of, the properties of materials or phenomena associated with their design, synthesis, processing, characterization, and utilization.Papers that report on modern materials modeling are of interest, including quantum chemical methods, density functional theory, semi-empirical and classical approaches, statistical mechanics, atomic-scale simulations, mesoscale modeling, phase-field techniques, and finite element methods. Not all topics that potentially fall under the category of computational materials science are appropriate for the journal. For example, submissions that focus on the design of components for structural applications, describe electrical behavior in a device, or characterize thermal or mass transport without extensive accompanying input and associated discussion from computational materials science methods of interest are best suited for other specialized journals.Reports of advances in technical methodologies, and the application of computational materials science to guide, interpret, inspire, or otherwise enhance related experimental materials research are of significant interest as long as the computational methods or results are a primary focus of the manuscript. Computers & Structures publishes advances in the development and use of computational methods for the solution of problems in engineering and the sciences. The range of appropriate contributions is wide, and includes papers on establishing appropriate mathematical models and their numerical solution in all areas of mechanics. The journal also includes articles that present a substantial review of a field in the topics of the journal.With the modern use of computers and numerical methods to model and solve problems, the traditional boundaries between the fields of solid/structural mechanics and fluid mechanics hardly exist any longer, and multiphysics problems are solved that involve all aspects of mechanics. The word 'structures' must therefore now be interpreted in a broad sense including solids, fluids and multiphysics.Computers & Structures publishes papers in these fields that either present novel and quite general techniques, or offer substantial new insights into important methods. If a paper presents novel techniques, some comparison with known advanced methods is necessary. If a paper is to provide substantial new insights into advanced methods, then this can be achieved by strong numerical experiments, some mathematical analysis, and/or comparisons with well-designed physical test data. Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics is an interdisciplinary journal exploring new ideas in continuum and quasi-continuum modeling of systems with a large number of degrees of freedom and sufficient complexity to require thermodynamic closure. Major emphasis is placed on papers seeking to bridge the gap between discrete and continuum approaches as well as micro and macro scales, by means of homogenization, statistical averaging, and other mathematical tools aimed at the judicial elimination of small time and length scales. In particular, the journal focuses on simultaneous descriptions of complex systems at several disparate scales. Papers presenting and explaining new experimental findings are highly encouraged. Lastly, the journal publishes numerical studies that build our understanding of the physical nature of phenomena.
